Who is Stephen Roach?
Stephen Roach has had a distinguished career as one of Wall Street’s most influential economists. He began his career on the research staff of the Federal Reserve Board and was also a research fellow at the Brookings Institution. In 1982, Roach joined Morgan Stanley, where he spent the majority of his 30-year career, ultimately serving as the firm’s Chief Economist and Chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia. During his tenure, he led a highly regarded team of economists worldwide and significantly influenced the global economic policy debate.
In 2010, Roach transitioned to academia, becoming a Senior Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute of Global Affairs and a Senior Lecturer at Yale’s School of Management. In the fall of 2022, he joined Yale Law School's Paul Tsai China Center as a Senior Research Scholar.
Roach holds a Ph.D. in economics from New York University and is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the Council on Foreign Relations, the Investment Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the China Advisory Board of the Environmental Defense Fund, and the Economics Advisory Board of the University of Wisconsin. His expertise and opinions on the global economy have been instrumental in shaping policy discussions from Beijing to Washington.
His latest book, Accidental Conflict: America, China, and the Clash of False Narratives (Yale University Press, Jun. 2023), provides a hard-hitting analysis of the economies, politics, and policies of both nations. Roach argues that much of the rhetoric on both sides is dangerously misguided, amplified by information distortion, and reflects each nation’s fears and vulnerabilities rather than a credible assessment of the risks they face. He outlines the disastrous toll of escalating conflict between China and America and offers a new roadmap to restore a mutually advantageous relationship.
